The announcement coincides with International Women’s Day which falls on Sunday 8 March. A fleet of eight boats competed in the annual Val Hodge race hosted by RYCV, with this also being the third race of the 19/20 PPWCS series. This year the day had a different format with 2 races being held.
It may have been a case of “saved by the wind†for Rio Olympic champion, Marit Bouwmeester. The three-time world champion led by 24 points over night but saw her margin trimmed to just two points after the first race of the final day. A big wind shift caught a number of the top sailors out, and Bouwmeester, who received a yellow flag (penalty turns), finished 29th. This became her second “drop†but brought into play a 24th from yesterday.
The Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta (AWKR), hosted by Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) each year, has deservedly earnt the reputation of being the largest all-women keelboat regatta in the world, with numbers in this 30th edition having the potential to exceed last year’s record 40 boats - if early indications are anything to go by.
Mara Stansky has finished the first day of the Laser Radial Worlds in a top ten spot. Â The conditions were difficult today for the sailors and race officers with shifty lights winds swinging South to South East at 8 to 15 knots. Â Only one race was completed per fleet as race management struggled to set the course. Â Blue Fleet had their race abandoned at the first top mark after a dramatic shift on the line.
