NT Womens Keelboat Regatta

Northern Territory Womens Keelboat Regatta

Introduction

The NT Women’s Regatta (NTWR) is a social 3 day regatta with 4 divisions from all over the Territory and interstate. It is open to most types of larger boats and welcomes the most seasoned or the newest of sailors.

The regatta is designed to promote and increase awareness of women in sailing and encourages female sailors to improve racing skills, leadership and decision-making; and to challenge themselves to compete with like-minded women.  We aim to create friendships and to ensure all competitors and volunteer sailing experiences at the Darwin Sailing Club are fun and rewarding.

There are plenty of social activities on offer and opportunities to network amongst interstate and local sailors.

History

When the 2020 Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta in Melbourne was cancelled, a few devastated locals got together and created the inaugural NT Womens Keelboat Regatta. The 20 original sailors turned into 80 women on water over 3 divisions and 13 boats, including 3 interstate teams crewing our Elliott 7’s.

The regatta was put together in only 8 weeks with overwhelming support from all members and the Northern Territory Government.  Due to the success, it is now a permanent feature in the NT calendar.

Boats Used

  • Private boats - keelboats & sports boats.  (Note:  All boats must be crewed by women.   The owner of the boat may choose to accompany the crew for safety reasons, however he must not helm or hold any other crew position.  The owner may assist in any emergency, however.)
  •  Charter Boats - DSC has 3 x Elliott 7 available.  The Elliot 7 Round Robin can accommodate 6 teams.

Divisions

  1. Large Keelboats
  2. Small Keelboats
  3. Multihulls
  4. Elliot 7 Round Robin

Crewing Opportunities

The club has a Crew Available form for individuals to complete. Any skippers needing crew are given the contact details of all individuals.  Whilst some skippers have permanent crew members, we also aim to introduce interested new crew to skippers.

If interested in skippering or crewing please complete the Expression of Interest Form on the DSC Event Website .

Eligibility/experience

All are welcome, the only requirement is that you are a full/crew member of an Australian Sailing affiliated club.  The DSC offers SailPass if you are new and have not made the leap into club membership yet.
