About the project

Hunters Hill Sailing Club hosted a Women and Girls Try Sailing event on 21 February 2026, providing an inclusive and supportive introduction to sailing for women and girls of all ages.

The morning began with a welcome and introduction to the club from an Australian Sailing Instructor, outlining the types of boats sailed at the club and the pathways available, from beginner programs through to pathway development and social racing.

Participants then took part in on-water sessions in small groups, supported by experienced female skippers. Each group received a safety briefing before heading out on the water, where they had the opportunity to take the helm, trim sails, and learn basic sailing skills in a relaxed, low-wind environment.

The event concluded with a shared morning tea, giving participants the opportunity to connect with skippers, volunteers, staff, and other attendees, and learn more about future sailing opportunities at the club. Additional measures were introduced to enhance inclusivity and comfort, including the provision of essential items and club merchandise. Participants who wished to receive one were also given a Hunters Hill Sailing Club t-shirt, helping to foster a sense of belonging and encourage ongoing involvement in club activities.

Participation

  • 16 participants
  • Supported by a team of experienced female skippers and volunteers
  • Delivered by a qualified Australian Sailing Instructor

Outcomes and impact

The event successfully introduced new participants to sailing and created a welcoming pathway for continued involvement:

  • Skill development: Participants gained hands-on experience with basic sailing skills, including steering and sail handling.
  • Confidence and inclusion: The all-female environment created a safe and supportive space, encouraging participants to try new roles and build confidence on the water.
  • Engagement and progression: Several younger participants expressed interest in school holiday and Learn to Sail programs, while adult participants enquired about further training opportunities.
  • Positive participant feedback: Attendees reported high levels of enjoyment, a sense of achievement, and strong interest in returning to sail again.

How the funding helped

The Sail Our Way grant supported the delivery of the event by enabling the club to provide a qualified instructor, refreshments, and participant merchandise. This ensured a well-supported, welcoming experience and helped remove barriers to participation.
