About the project

City Sail is a two-day regatta specifically for women and girls, hosted each September by Albert Park Yacht Club. Held on Albert Park Lake, the regatta offers flat-water sailing with significantly milder conditions than Port Phillip Bay, making it ideal for all-year-round sailing and particularly enjoyable in September.

City Sail combines high-level coaching with coached racing in a fun, supportive environment. Each morning features small-group coaching sessions tailored to skill levels, followed by short-course coached racing in the afternoons. A community BBQ on Saturday provides an opportunity for sailors, families, and volunteers to connect and celebrate the event.

2025 Participation

  • 36 sailors in total – 14 single-handers, 7 double-handers, 8 youth sailors.
  • Volunteers: 32 rostered volunteers, plus additional helpers who joined on the day.

Outcomes and impact

The Sail Our Way grant enabled Albert Park Yacht Club to enhance the quality of coaching by reducing the ratio of sailors per coach, giving each participant more dedicated attention. This investment:

  • Improved the skills and confidence of the women and girls who participated.
  • Raised the profile of women’s sailing at Albert Park Lake.
  • Encouraged local engagement and increased awareness of sailing opportunities for women.

How the funding helped

The grant allowed APYC to provide more coaches per sailor, improving the learning experience and ensuring participants received the full benefit of dedicated coaching. The funding was crucial in raising the overall standard and enjoyment of the regatta.
