Sail Our Way Case Study: Sail Our Way Women’s Intro to Sailing

About the project
Connells Point Sailing Club delivered its Sail Our Way Women’s Intro to Sailing program to introduce women to sailing in a supportive, social, and beginner-friendly environment.
The program featured an Intro to Sailing day, where 21 women participated in a mix of onshore learning, practical sailing experiences, and social connection activities designed to build confidence and encourage ongoing participation in sailing.
Participants were introduced to sailing through rigging education, safety briefings, launching procedures, and hands-on sailing experiences aboard Mirrors and Pacers with experienced instructors onboard. The day concluded with a social debrief and afternoon tea, providing an opportunity for participants to connect and learn more about future sailing opportunities at the club.
A key feature of the program was the focus on ongoing connection and retention. Following the event, the club established a women’s WhatsApp “find a crew” group to encourage participants to continue sailing together using club dinghies and connect with future sailing opportunities.
Participation
- 21 women participants
- Supported by 9 instructors across two sessions
- Supported by 4 safety boat crew
- Utilised 4 dinghies (2 Mirrors and 2 Pacers) and 2 powerboats for on-water support
Outcomes and impact
The program delivered strong outcomes in supporting women’s participation and progression in sailing:
- Increased visibility: The program raised awareness of sailing opportunities for women through social media and community promotion.
- Confidence and participation: Participants continued sailing together on subsequent club sailing days with support from instructors and fellow sailors.
- Community connection: The social debrief and ongoing WhatsApp group helped build relationships and encouraged continued involvement in sailing.
- Pathway development: Strong interest in the program has encouraged the club to explore the development of an adult Learn to Sail course for 2026–27.
How the funding helped
The Sail Our Way grant supported the delivery of the program by contributing towards instructor payments, catering, and updated safety equipment, including new PFDs.
The funding also supported the social component of the day, helping create opportunities for women to connect, debrief, and continue engaging with sailing beyond the initial session.
